Irish Whiskey Ice Cream

Murphy's Ice Cream, the shop behind the wonderful Ice Cream Ireland blog, says that the Irish Whiskey Ice Cream is its best selling flavor. I figured I'd better try it to see what all the fuss was about.

n.o.e.'s notes:

- We have tons of Scotch Whisky (no "e") but I wanted to give this the full Irish respect it deserves, so we bought some Jameson's Irish Whiskey (with an "e")

- The ice cream has a pretty standard custard base, then cream and whiskey are added. I wondered how the ice cream would taste since the whiskey was not cooked at all.

the verdict:

Wow, this is great ice cream! I'd been afraid the ice cream would end up too boozy, but it is pretty subtle and delicate. The custard base makes it good and creamy, with a definite but mild kick from the whiskey. My husband flipped for this one, ranking it right behind vanilla (and equivalent to the fleur de lait) - he dearly loves white ice creams!

This was the ice cream that I paired with the applesauce cake, and it was amazing together - the caramel and the whiskey flavors combined beautifully. I can see that it would also be wonderful with oatmeal or spice cakes, bread puddings, or fruit crisps.

Of course it's also delicious all by itself in a big bowl!

I bet that would be a good pairing! It is so much fun to read about all these different flavors you make! Maybe someday...right now I have to play with "Yes, but will it play in Peoria?" mindset due to alcohol and kids.

It sounds wonderful! My grandmother put whiskey (not sure whether she added the "e" or not) in her wonderful chruschiki (cookies), and it probably gave that same mild little kick of flavor that it gives your ice cream.

(Ice Cream Week has been great! I hope it becomes a regular feature of your wonderful blog.)

Mmm, sounds good. I might have to buy some whiskey. =) Fruit crisp sounds good, too. I haven't made any sort of crisp or cobbler this summer--too busy making other stuff. But I have some plumcots that are getting soft, so maybe tomorrow...

I really like boozy ice cream (especially when the booz is not cooked). I'll have to try this.

How can it be bad with Irish Whiskey? :) I love using Irish in baking. I'm sure it tasted quite nice! How neat to be sampling and making all these varieties of ice cream - what a way to end the summer!

This looks delicious! And I think we even have some Jameson's whiskey-with-an-e. I'm always a little afraid of boozy sweets, but subtle booziness sounds just right!
